The operator job

You need a 3–8 minute video that shows:

  • How invoices get coded.
  • How a close checklist runs on Monday.
  • How a new contractor requests access.

You do not need lights, a presenter schedule, or a reshoot when the SOP changes one paragraph. Synthesia’s job is script → AI presenter video in the browser.

Homepage/pricing (2026-09-11): avatars and voiceovers in 160+ languages; plans from free Basic through Starter, Creator, and Enterprise.

Plan math (self-serve)

Plan Monthly Annual (as shown) Video minutes (published) Seats (published)
Basic $0 — 10 mins/mo (credits model; watermark constraints on free) 1 editor; no guests
Starter $29/mo $18/mo billed yearly ($264/yr per FAQ) 10 mins/mo (120 mins/yr on annual framing) 1 editor, 3 guests
Creator $89/mo $64/mo billed yearly ($804/yr per FAQ) 30 mins/mo (360 mins/yr on annual framing) 1 editor, 5 guests
Enterprise Custom Custom Unlimited minutes (marketed) Custom editors/guests; SSO, SCORM, brand kits

Credits are the shared meter across video, dubbing, and some generative assets. Unused minutes do not roll over (FAQ).

A 90-minute first SOP video

0–20 min — Write the script in operator English
Short sentences. Name the clicks. No hype. Example: “Open Xero. Go to Bank accounts. Select Operating. Match the five SparkReceipt lines.”

20–35 min — Build in Synthesia
Pick a stock avatar (or personal avatar if your annual plan includes one — confirm FAQ). Paste script. Add screenshots as scenes or cutaways.

35–50 min — Generate and watch once
Fix mispronunciations with phonetic spellings or script tweaks. Regenerate only changed seconds when possible (Synthesia FAQ describes partial re-charge behavior — confirm in-product).

50–70 min — Export / share
Download MP4 on paid plans or share link. Put the file next to the written SOP in Drive/Notion.

70–90 min — Assign
Send to one teammate. Ask them to perform the task with only the video. Note every pause. Edit the script, not the tooling.

Where Synthesia fits operator tutorial work

Avatar presenters let you publish explainers without scheduling a camera day. That matches finance/AP/real-estate tutorial work: dollars, minutes, clicks.

Good fits:

  • Internal SOPs
  • Client onboarding explainers
  • Multilingual versions of the same master script
  • Compliance-ish walkthroughs that change quarterly

Poor fits:

  • Cinematic ads (use generative clip tools)
  • Editing a podcast you already recorded (use Descript)
  • High-volume marketing localization races where HeyGen’s workflow wins your team’s preference test

Budgeting minutes like a close calendar

Starter’s 10 minutes/month is roughly:

  • Two 5-minute SOPs, or
  • One 8-minute SOP + small edits, or
  • Ten 1-minute micro-clips

If you ship weekly training, Creator’s 30 minutes/month is the realistic self-serve tier. Enterprise belongs on LMS/SSO conversations, not solo experiments.

Annual Starter at $264/yr (~$22/mo effective vs $29) is the usual cost control move once you know you will keep the tool.

Quality control checklist

  • [ ] Script names exact menu labels
  • [ ] Screenshots are current (re-capture after UI changes)
  • [ ] Captions on for silent autoplay contexts
  • [ ] Version number in title (AP-intake-v3)

Security and policy notes

Enterprise features (SSO, SCORM, brand kits) matter when legal/IT must approve tools. Self-serve Starter/Creator are fine for many small operators, but still:

  • Do not paste secrets into scripts.
  • Do not generate videos that impersonate a real person without rights.
  • Read Synthesia’s acceptable use / moderation posture if you are in a regulated firm.

Pairing with Desk Teams

Synthesia explains the workflow on video. Desk Teams packs install Grok Bot rosters that run parts of the workflow. Keep them separate in buyer education:

  • Video training → Synthesia
  • Paste-ready bot seats / routines → https://deskteams.ai

Monthly Desk ($149 or $199/mo matching pack) is for keeping an installed desk tuned — not for rendering avatars.

Script template (copy and adapt)

Title: AP intake — stage only
      Length target: 4:00

      Scene 1 — Purpose (20s)
Today we stage vendor bills. Humans still click pay.

      Scene 2 — Inbox (45s)
Open the AP intake mailbox. Download PDFs for invoices dated this week.

      Scene 3 — Coding (60s)
Propose account codes from the chart. Flag anything without a PO.

      Scene 4 — Staging (60s)
Enter the bill in QBO or BILL as draft/staged. Do not approve payment.

      Scene 5 — Handoff (40s)
Drop the staged list in the AP channel. Owner reviews before pay run.

Paste into Synthesia. Replace product nouns with your stack. Keep verbs concrete.

Personal avatars vs stock

Prefer stock or brand avatars for SOP libraries unless you have a deliberate staff-presenter need. Personal avatars on annual Starter/Creator (FAQ: one custom personal avatar included on annual plans) are optional for companies that want a staff twin; they are not required for SOP libraries.

Studio Express avatars are listed as a paid add-on (~$1,000/year on pricing page) — skip unless you have a branded presenter need and budget.

Localization without a second film day

If you support bilingual teams, write the master script in English operator voice, generate, then use dubbing/translation features within your credit budget. Starter dubbing minutes are limited versus Creator — read the credit table before promising five languages on Starter.

Failure modes

Failure Fix
Avatar misreads tickers/acronyms Phonetic spelling; add SSML-like pauses if supported
Minute cap mid-month Shorter scripts; wait for renewal; upgrade
SOP outdated after UI change Re-capture screenshots; regenerate changed scenes only
Team ignores video Assign a practice task; measure completion
Legal blocks AI avatars Pause; use Descript screen recordings of a willing operator instead

30-day library plan (Starter)

Week 1: one 5-min core SOP.
Week 2: one 3-min variant.
Week 3: edit pass on week 1 after user feedback.
Week 4: one micro-clip (60–90s) for a single click path.

That pacing respects ~10 minutes/month if regenerations are controlled.

Creator plan: double the cadence or lengthen to 6–8 minute deep dives.

See Synthesia pricing

Bottom line

If your bottleneck is “we never film training,” Synthesia Starter or Creator removes the camera day. Count minutes like you count close tasks. Stay on Basic only long enough to test; buy annual once the SOP library is real.
